Title: Seismic Retrofitting of Didipio Gymnasium Using FRP 600gsm
Location: Didipio, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines
Scope:
Structural reinforcement of 12 load-bearing columns using FRP 600gsm carbon fiber sheets.
Repair of corroded roof beams and slab edges.
Foundation stabilization in high-moisture zones
Structural Issues Identified:
Columns: Cracks and reduced load capacity due to aging and seismic vulnerability.
Beams: Excessive deflection under increased machinery loads.
Floor Slabs: Surface deterioration from chemical exposure in production zones.
Foundations: Minor settlement in high-moisture areas.
Retrofitting Strategy:
Columns:
Wrapped 25 critical columns with FRP 600gsm carbon fiber sheets (WFC-600 of Wolfix)(2 layers, 70% fiber volume) to restore axial/shear capacity.
Design Basis: NSCP 2015 Seismic Code & ACI 440.2R-17 for FRP.
Beams:
Applied FRP U-wraps to beam ends to mitigate shear failure risks.
Installed steel plate bonding in high-stress zones for hybrid reinforcement.
Slabs/Foundations:
Repaired slabs with epoxy injection + FRP overlays in corrosive zones.
Stabilized foundations via polyurethane grouting
FRP 600gsm retrofit effectively restored structural integrity, meeting PH seismic standards (PNS 2146:2022).
Key Results:
✔️ 100% columns passed post-retrofit load tests.
✔️ Project cost 20% lower vs. traditional steel jacketing.
✔️ Zero disruption to factory operations
